Creativity with the Help of Crochet | Skyward Film

Furry Monsters

Meet?Tums and Pretty Jeff.?The one on the left has stomach problems and the one on the right has a very?fashionable hairdo. These fuzzy monsters are a type of Amigurumi, the Japanese art of?creating small animals. ML,?an artist and?a good friend,?crocheted these?little guys by looping thread with a hooked needle. Then he added stuffing and?sewed?them together to create formidable products.? (And with a charismatic grin, he?explains?how ladies?comprise 90% of his business.)

ML isn?t only a talented guy?he?s extremely creative. As a fellow entrepreneur, I?m fortunate to spend time around him and hear feedback?from his audience,?often a mix of?reverent?encouragement?and envious heckling.?His confidence is key,?eliciting a curiosity?and professionalism?in his approach to creativity. It?ensures his success.

Like ML, anyone can maximize their creative abilities by routinely relating different products and connecting them through an idea, also known as cross-referencing. ML?s stuffed creatures are prime examples of?a creative result. They display how a comforting toy (one idea) with a deviant expression (a second idea) can combine into something novel, maybe comic, or elevated to a new diminsion of comfort as a protective symbol.

Cross-Referencing in ActionML?follows his own patterns for cross-referencing; yet this technique is nothing new. ML?browses around New York for something unique,?visiting The Strand?Bookstore at Union Square or plucking any articles of interest.?Here, you?ll notice a sample collection on mythology:?The Book Of Symbols, The King and the Corpse,?The Hero with a Thousand Faces, The Oedipus Cycle, and?even The Holy Qur?an.?To cross-reference, ML?writes notes, juxtaposes his thoughts,?and explores them.?With practice, he effortlessly forms his own opinions, interpretations, reflections, and decisions toward future action.?And it?s easy: The typical cross-referencing experience can involve a normal day, cross-referencing a book and a film.

An Automatic Response to UglinessWhile first seeming clich?, it?s important to consider that many people miss the value behind?such an?action,?placing a mental block on disagreeable ideas. For example, how many Cocktail fans now avoid a possibly good Tom Cruise movie, because once he converted to Scientology, he betrayed?their?preconception of the all-American hero? Without realizing it, the mind can close down and attach a limiting thought to a possibly good opportunity: Book clubs will seem like a meeting of emotionally-needy women; or reading the history behind a sculpture will appear like the act of snobbish intellectuals who lack any empathy for the?average or honest person.?Such thoughts are self-defeating. (You?ll see a positive example of this process during my next blog entry when I discuss two unrelated products and connect them through an idea.)

The usefulness of cross-referencing rests on two related principles:

  1. The first principle, plain and simple, objectivity, suggests that you?re stepping out of your own shoes, out of the limits of your individual mind, and perceiving?an?outlook with the aid of an impersonal source,?like a website blog?that?alters your?interpretation of a movie. (Think about Casablanca?and the irresponsible main character as a newly responsible hero: ?Here?s looking at you, kid!?)
  2. And secondly, we consider?anchoring, which?is a term used to describe a situation?when your mind automatically turns on a light switch of information?more often than not, to the wrong room of your house.?By actively observing this process,?the mind?illuminates?the?dark places,?fine-tunes?your attention-generator,?and?permits a?smooth,?creative flow.

Finally, remember to relax!?A person? overwhelms themselves with too many books and materials. The weight of responsibility?of remembering and processing rich content?quite literally clutters your mind. Intimidated by a stack of books,?a helpless feeling?develops into?an inert?state of?vulnerability. Seemingly simple worries like?a?large to-do list?fester and?irritate the spirit, diverting one?s?creativity?away from?accomplishing his/her?goals. So take your time; take pleasure in the process and reflect on what you?ve seen.?Stick to?a single well-chosen book, or if you must use several sources, at least articulate your reasons for cross-referencing unrelated materials. Accomplish this by writing down the reason on a sheet of paper, preferably somewhere visible, or rewrite the reason on a yellow sticky note.

There are other efficient methods, perhaps less relevant to creativity and more relevant to the mastery of a skill. If you?re attempting to pick up a new skill, a ?how-to? or ?self-improvement? book compliments practical experience. In graduate programs, academic curriculums will train students to balance their individual studies and group courses (visual/aural learning) with live teaching (applied learning) for the best results. This technique constitutes the foundation of my educational program for writers and filmmakers.

Lochte chases more gold on Olympics day three

Ryan Lochte will target his second gold medal on day three of the Olympics Monday as America's swimmers attempt to bounce back from the shock of losing their 4x100 relay crown.

Lochte, who got his Games campaign off to a flier on Saturday when he crushed compatriot and long-time rival Michael Phelps to win the 400m medley, suffered a reality check on Sunday in the United States' relay loss to France.

The 27-year-old will line up in the 200m freestyle final against China's Sun Yang, who will also be targeting his second gold of the Games after his win in the 400m freestyle on Saturday.

Lochte has the opportunity to avenge the USA's relay defeat when he lines up against Yannick Agnel, the Frenchman who reeled him in over the last leg.

Phelps meanwhile will attempt to get his individual campaign back on track following his chastening loss in the 400m medley final when he begins the defence of his 200m butterfly crown.

The four swimming medals on offer are among a total of 12 up for grabs across all competitions as the Olympics gets into full swing on Monday.

Host nation Great Britain, still awaiting their first gold of the Games, will be hoping diving star Tom Daley can challenge for honours in the 10m synchronised platform final where he competes with partner Peter Waterfield.

The first medals in artistic gymnastics will be decided with the men's team final event, where China and Japan will attempt to put poor qualifying displays behind them to challenge for gold.

Japan and China, the dominant force in Beijing in 2008, had been expected to fight it out for the major honours in London, but they were eclipsed by the United States, Russia and Britain on Saturday's opening day.

Japan ended in fifth position in the overall team ranking, with reigning Olympic champions China one place below them in sixth.

Japan superstar Kohei Uchimura has warned his team-mates not to become fixated on China as they prepare for the final, which he blamed for their poor performance in qualifying.

"We were all more or less thinking about how the Chinese were going to perform, so it might have affected our performance," he said.

"From now on, we'll try not to think about how the Chinese team are going to do and just try to do our best."

Defending champions China will become the first team since Japan in 1976 to successfully retain the team title if they recover to win gold.

China, who were leading the medal table with six golds after Sunday's action, will also attempt to maintain their dominance in the shooting, where Zhu Qinan can become the first man to win medals in the 10m air rifle competition at three separate Olympics.

VINTAGE: 'Sweetest LeMon' To Lead Tour ? RuralHobbyFarm.com

By RuralHobbyFarmer on July 27, 2012

More than 50 oddball cars participating in Hagerty?s Tour of LeMons in northern California on August 18 will be led by a 1970 Subaru 360 Deluxe sedan owned by Mindy Kindelberger of Lake Havasu City, Ariz.

Kindelberger won the opportunity after receiving more than 30 percent of votes in Hagerty?s second annual Search for America?s Sweetest LeMon contest. She and her Subaru, dubbed ?Lil Cab,? will lead the tour as it departs Laguna Grande Park in Seaside, Calif., at 10 a.m.

?Everyone in our hometown of Lake Havasu knows me for my car. People honk, take pictures and wave to me all the time,? Kindelberger says. ?My husband and I both love collecting cars, especially the oddballs, which are the ones that always get the most attention.?

Hagerty, the world?s leading insurer of classic cars, held the contest to find America?s favorite eccentric automobile. Each owners of a unique vehicle submitted photos of the car and a brief description of why it deserved to win. The top 10 candidates were posted for public vote on Hagerty.com, with the winner receiving an all-expense-paid trip to Hagerty?s Tour of LeMons.

The Tour of LeMons gives owners and enthusiasts a chance to enjoy lesser-celebrated vehicles as a counterpoint to the popular and prestigious automotive events that make up Monterey Classic Car Week every August.

?Regardless of vehicle type, the passion for automobiles is the one thing that ties all classic car enthusiasts together,? said McKeel Hagerty, CEO of Hagerty. ?The Tour of LeMons is a way to celebrate the unique cars that otherwise would not typically be honored.?

'Wazzock': British media hammer Romney on Olympic comments

(Charles Dharapak/AP)

LONDON?On day three of his overseas tour, Mitt Romney woke up to unfriendly headlines from the British media, which continue to trash him for telling NBC News that he found preparations for the Olympics here "disconcerting."

"Mitt the Twit," declared The Sun tabloid, condemning Romney as a "wannabe president."

The Independent headlined its take on Romney's trip "Romneyshambles"?accusing him of not only committing a diplomatic gaffe but later "the cardinal sin of U.S. politics, flip-flopping" on his criticism.

The Daily Telegraph suggested Romney's "Olympic gaffe" had overshadowed his trip to London.

Meanwhile, the conservative Daily Mail slammed Romney as "devoid of charm, offensive and a wazzock."

Romney's comments led newscasts on both Sky News and the BBC on Thursday night and early Friday morning, just hours ahead of the Olympic opening ceremonies here.

"Is this guy really prepared to be president?" one Sky News reporter asked in his Thursday night report about Romney's day in London. The reporter trashed the GOP candidate's comments as "just daft."

Romney has repeatedly tried to dial back his criticism, first in a news conference Thursday outside No. 10 Downing Street, where he had met with British Prime Minister David Cameron, who had been publicly critical of Romney's remarks earlier in the day.

[Get more updates from Romney's overseas trip by following @hollybdc on Twitter]

In an interview with CNN's Piers Morgan Thursday night, Romney again tried to contain the controversy, telling the CNN host he believes the London games will be successful.

"It's great. It's absolutely fabulous," Romney said of being in London for the games. "You know I'd never been to an Olympics before I was given the Olympic job. I mean I've done the same thing everybody else did. I watched the games on TV. But to actually be here and to experience not just the athletes but also the volunteers who are working hard and excited, and then the whole community comes together. ? It's fabulous."

Citing the "enthusiasm" of the people in London, Romney added, "I think you are going to see terrific games that will be long time in our memories."

Lawyers for disabled China activist appeal conviction

Lawyers for disabled Chinese rights defender Ni Yulan on Friday went to court to challenge convictions for fraud and "picking quarrels", for which she is serving a 32-month jail sentence.

Ni, 52, has been confined to a wheelchair since an earlier stint in jail. She was found guilty this year of fraud and "picking quarrels" -- charges her lawyers and supporters say were trumped up to silence her.

The activist, whose husband Dong Jiqin was also convicted on the latter charge, spent much of the trial lying on a bed in the courtroom due to her poor health and needed a respirator to breathe.

There was a heavy police presence outside the court in Beijing as the hearing got under way Friday.

It was not immediately clear whether the couple or their daughter Dong Xuan, who was placed under effective house arrest after the original hearing earlier this year, were able to attend.

The couple's lawyer Cheng Hai told AFP before the appeal hearing that he had witness statements from the alleged fraud victims to support the legal challenge.

"They have not only provided written testimonies that they donated the funds voluntarily and were not defrauded (but also) video recordings," Cheng said.

Trained as a lawyer, Ni began providing legal aid to residents facing home demolitions after her own courtyard home in central Beijing was requisitioned in 2001.

The next year she was sentenced to one year in jail for "obstructing official business" and disbarred as a lawyer.

After her release she was confined to a wheelchair, which the rights group Amnesty International blamed on abuse while in prison.

In 2008, Ni and her husband began living on the street after their home was demolished, and Ni received another jail sentence of two years for "harming public property".

After a brief period of freedom in 2010, police relocated her and her husband to a hotel and later requested them to pay the 69,000 yuan ($11,000) bill, which they refused to do.

In April last year she and her husband were detained again as part of a roundup of activists amid calls for protests akin to the Arab Spring popular revolts that erupted across the Middle East.

Her sentencing in April this year sparked an international outcry, and the United States and European Union have both called for her release.

Dish's latest Hopper tweak reeks of legal positioning ? paidContent

As Variety first reported, Dish has quietly been rolling out a software upgrade to its new DVRs that puts the user more in control of the ?AutoHop? commercial-skipping feature. Dish says the upgrade ?enhances the user experience,? but it seems more legally motivated.

Facing a legal showdown with the broadcast networks over commercial-skipping features in its digital video recorders, Dish Network has quietly made several operating-system tweaks designed to put the ad-circumvention process more in the hands of the user.

This could be crucial in the satellite?s legal battle with broadcasters over these features, given that subscribers now have more control of how they?re used.

With the new upgrade, Dish?s Hopper DVRs are no longer set by default to record every prime-time show on each of the Big Four networks ? i.e. ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC. The user now has to select which networks they want recorded.

Dish subscribers have to switch a default setting from ?no? to ?yes? if they want commercials deleted from those recordings ? that setting had previously been defaulted to the ?on? mode.

Dish?s Ergen: AutoHop protecting TV from internet video barberism

Subscribers are also now in charge of when programs are deleted, as opposed to the Hopper setting a default date.

The tweaks, which began rolling out from Dish last week, were originally reported Thursday by Variety. Dish later confirmed them with us. The tweaks are just beginning to be discussed by Dish subscribers in various satellite and cable TV forums.

A Dish spokesman told us the upgrade was something the company does ?routinely? to its products and that it was meant to ?enhance the user experience.? Of course, this reeks more of legal positioning.

Dish is currently battling CBS, Fox and NBC in court, with the networks asserting that the so-called ?Auto Hop? commercial-skipping feature violates Dish?s affiliate agreement to carry those networks? channels.

Also read: Dish defends ad-skipping DVR ? peers throw it under the bus

Dish has been seeking to exploit legal precedent established in 2008 by Cablevision, which won a New York appellate court ruling against broadcasters who were suing the cable company over its virtual DVR service. Key to that ruling: subscribers had ample control of the technology, not Cablevision.

Dish has already lost one key early round. It actually filed suit first to have the case heard in New York, but the Big Apple court ruled that it would be decided in California, where the broadcasters had subsequently filed to have their claims heard.

Ami Gives a Unique Look at Rav Elyashiv, zt?l, from Inside His Household

(Thursday, July 26th, 2012)

The passing of Rav Elyashiv has left the Jewish world mourning the posek hador. Much of what has been said and written about him has focused on his absolute dedication to Torah learning and rejection of the physical to maintain his learning. But this week?s Ami exposes a lesser-known side of the gadol.

Along with interviews of his grandsons, talmidim, and other members of his inner circle, Ami interviewed Rav Elyashiv?s daughters and daughters-in-laws about their great father and his relationship with them. They painted a picture of a loving and doting father, concerned about their happiness and success, and they gave a view of the joy and simplicity in a house dedicated to Torah and avodah.

The Death Writer: Working with Death Wednesday: Hospice

Piper Bayard is a recovering attorney with a college degree or two. She?s also a belly dancer from waaaay back, and she currently pens post-apocalyptic sci-fi and spy novels when she isn?t shooting, SCUBA diving, blogging, baking cookies, or chauffeuring her children to their teenaged immediacies.

DW: ?Why did you want to become a hospice volunteer?
PB: When my mother was dying, my husband, young children and I were her only present family. She was in a nice nursing home, and I visited her every day, but she was often frightened and confused when I wasn?t there. I frequently wished for someone to sit with her when I couldn?t. A couple of years after she crossed over, I felt strong enough to volunteer with Hospice for the express purpose of being there for people the way I wished someone had been there for my mother and me.

DW: What was the training like?
PB: The training was thought-provoking and reassuring. I worried that I wouldn?t know what to say or do with strangers. The teachers really helped us with that, practicing both common scenarios and the more bizarre exchanges that could come up.

DW: Did you have any personal experience with death prior to your work with?hospice?
PB: Growing up on a farm, death was a natural part of life. Also, I had lost family members, and, similar to a death, I had lost my first husband to mental illness.

DW: What was the most difficult part of the work?
PB: For myself, I needed to keep my Hospice time compartmentalized. I was determined to not let my emotions about the people I visited spill over onto my family and friends. After all, I volunteered, not them.

I developed a ritual to help me do that. I washed my hands when I entered the facility, and I washed my hands when I left. For me, it symbolized putting on a certain energy and taking it off again.

DW: What was the most gratifying part of the work?
PB: I worked with Alzheimer?s patients. I found that because I did not know them before, I could see them as whole people, just the way they were, with no sense of loss.

From that perspective, I found that each of them had a hook which would open up a part of themselves that was still in there. For one patient, it was music. For another, it was wildlife.

I visited Mrs. G several times and got exactly no response from her. She was a painter in her youth who painted landscapes so I took a book of beautiful Irish landscapes on the theory that she might enjoy the scenes. Nothing. I couldn?t tell if she knew I was there.

Then one day, I took my dog, Daisy. When Daisy walked in, Mrs. G woke up. She couldn?t care less that I was there, but she talked Daisy, and you?d never know how unresponsive she was only moments before. After a few minutes, I sat beside her and pulled out the book of Irish landscapes. The longest she was ever ?present? was 20 minutes or so, but that it happened at all felt like a miracle.

Over the months I visited Mrs. G, she made jokes about the landscapes, and she told me about her sister, the dancer, who danced for the Queen. And I learned from her daughter that she?d once had a dog that looked exactly like Daisy.

Daisy was the hook that gave me a peek into her mind. There is nothing like finding that hook and discovering the beautiful person who is still very much there, even if I can only see them for a few moments at a time. Now that Daisy is crossed over, too, I like to think she is visiting Mrs. G.

DW: ?Did you learn anything about the dying process that you'd like to share?
PB: I learned that all things happen as they should, and that everyone?s death is their own. It doesn?t belong to spouses, parents, or children.

DW: How about grieving? Were most people surrendering to the idea of death,?or were they afraid?
PB: Because I worked with Alzheimer?s patients, they were generally happily unaware that they were dying. However, my mother was, I think, fairly typical for a non-Alzheimer?s patient. She was in denial sometimes, and at other times angry, sad, and, more rarely, accepting. She showed all stages of the Kubler Ross grief cycle, and often on the same day. By the end, though, she was ready.

DW: ?Any unusual stories?
PB: Again, the unusual story comes from my mother rather than from my official patients. For days she spoke to ?someone? in a light that only she could see, telling them, ?No. I can?t get what I need on that side.? She was waiting for a specific person to visit her, and none of us thought he would come.

She basked in that invisible light, talking to the people she saw in it and telling the people here who blocked it to move out of the way. Then, she quit eating, drinking, and talking as she hung between worlds, ?actively dying? for days.

Suddenly on the fourth day of actively dying, she woke up, got up, and started drinking water again. She by golly wasn?t going anywhere until she got her visitor, the one none my family hadn?t heard from in days.

Sure enough, I got the call from the nursing home that night, warning me that he was there. She died a few hours later with him at her side. Like I said, each person?s death is their own, and it?s so not about us.

Some Recipe Suggestions for Commonly Required ... - Health Funda

Aromatherapy products are as flexible as your needs and the effects of the various essential oils and carriers you use to create them. So starting out can be a little daunting, as you?re confronted with all these hundreds of different plant essences and their various uses, but you have little idea what you can use to work with which and whether what you have in your head is even possible.

Aromatherapy Products

To which end, it might be useful to come up with a few sample recipes you can try out for commonly required effects. Note that all essential oils must be mixed with carrier oils before application to the human skin, or you can cause organ damage: and also be aware that carrier oils themselves have different properties, which you might want to take into account when mixing your products:

For fragrancing rooms and lifting your spirits in various seasons or with various conditions, have a go at some of the following.

This recipe is for an aroma that really brings out the cosiness and comfort of your surroundings. Use 15 drops of orange oil; 6 drops of cinnamon oil; and 2 drops of clove oil, to create a warm and welcoming scent that?ll lift your spirits when the nights are long and the days are short.

Mahama: writer, historian and Ghana's new president

Ghana's John Dramani Mahama, sworn in as president on Tuesday following the sudden death of John Atta Mills, says he was forever changed by his boyhood experiences during a 1966 military coup.

The 53-year-old who had been vice president was born in Bole Bamboi in northern Ghana and holds degrees in history and communications, according to Ghanian media.

He served as a diplomat in Japan in the early 1990s before returning to Ghana, where he was first elected to parliament as a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) party.

He later became the chairman of the West Africa Caucus at the Pan African Parliament in Pretoria, before deceased president Mills tipped him for the vice presidency.

Mills died on Tuesday at a hospital in Accra following an unspecified illness.

Mahama, according to a recently published memoir, grew up as a child of privilege.

In the book, "My First Coup d'Etat -- And Other True Stories from the Lost Decades of Africa," he describes his experiences at an elite boarding school in the capital Accra, where he was drilled in the customs of Ghana's former colonial power, Britain.

"The history and prestige (of the Achimota boarding school) did not stop me from hating it," he wrote.

In the book's first chapter, he vividly recalls the day in 1966 when he learned Ghana's founding president Kwame Nkrumah was ousted in a military coup.

"When I look back on my life it's clear to me that this moment marked the awakening of my consciousness. It changed my life and influenced all the moments that followed," he wrote.

His father, who served as junior minister in Nkrumah's government, was briefly detained and interrogated by the coup leaders.

Mahama described his journey around Accra, accompanied by an official from his school, in search of his father, who was later released unharmed.

"I felt, as children often do, that my family and I were somehow shielded, automatically exempt from anything tragic," he wrote in the book.

He recently told the US National Public Radio that his childhood was heavily influenced by American cultural icons, including James Brown and the Jackson Five.

He served as the west African nation's communication minister from 1998 to 2001 and as the spokesman for the NDC between 2001 and 2004, when the party was in opposition, according to local media.

He takes over a nation of some 25 million people, lauded for boasting some of the strongest democracy credentials in Africa, which has recently become a significant oil producer.

Greencyclopedia?: The Green Passport Initiative: Changing the ...

Why do people travel?
Early in the Neolithic age the ancient man began to build roads to facilitate the movement of troops through empires, and eventually civilians began to travel in caravans. Travel for the purpose of commerce and trade began to develop as a consequence and took explorers to new lands to meet other people and bring back treasures, foods, and fur. In Medieval times traveling received a religious connotation when the most famous travelers were pilgrims and missionaries, however, it took a long time for people to start perceiving travelling as a leisure activity. In the late 16th century it became fashionable among young aristocrats and rich people to make "Grand Tours" to London, Paris, Venice, Florence, and Rome in order to enlighten themselves and ?become closer to art, literature, and music. ?The Industrial Revolution facilitated the growth of middle class, who now had money and free time. It was the first time that traveling was done for the sole pleasure of it. Thomas Cook, whose name is given to popular travel guides, was the first to propose to the general public a real traveling solution. He began with organizing tours across Britain then quickly moved to Europe, where Paris and the Swiss Alps became the most popular destinations. He was a pioneer in travelling services and now all large travel organizations base themselves on his ideas: excursions, sightseeing, timetables, travel guides, and routes. In the 20th century, with the invention of the airplane, dramatic changes happened in the way people travel. According to the Smithsonian Institution and F?d?ration A?ronautique Internationale, the Wright Brothers made the first sustained, controlled ?flight in North Carolina on December 17, 1903. Soon after, in June 16, 1909,?Glenn Curtiss?deliverd the?Golden Flier, the first commercially-sold airplane in America. World War II only enhanced the usage of airplanes and made some of countries very experienced in airplane production. After the war,?commercial aviation?grew rapidly, using mostly ex-military aircraft to transport people and cargo. Much of our free time now is spent travelling, even on weekends, discovering new destinations and gaining new experience. Incredible opportunities are available to most individuals now; we can travel to different countries, even other continents in just several hours. It is estimated that approximately 4.5 million people travel by plane each day meaning that roughly within a year this figure reaches 1643 million people. ?An amazing number! With the addition of railway, cars, buses, and other means of transports the scope of our movements is almost unimaginable. ? The increase in tourism worldwide is a trend that has enhanced the globalization process and culture-sharing. Many travelers speak of the personal gains they acquire through travel, returning to their homes more tolerant and open-minded. While this trend is surely interesting and exciting, it poses a large challenge for our planet.? The more we travel, the more traces we leave behind ourselves, and not all the time these traces are really good. Exploration's carbon footprint The rapid growth of air travel in recent years contributed to a significant increase in total pollution. In the European Union, greenhouse gas emissions from aviation increased by 87% between 1990 and 2006. Like all human activities involving burning, most forms of aviation release carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gases (GHG) into the Earth's atmosphere, contributing to the acceleration of global warming and (in the case of CO2) ocean acidification. Achim Steiner, UN Under Secretary General and UNEP Executive Director, said: "Tourism, the world's biggest industry is booming. By 2020, the number of international arrivals by air and by sea could reach 1.6 billion annually. This growth brings the prospect of income and economic development to countless tourist destinations in rich and poor countries alike. The challenge is to manage this growth sustainably. Governments have a key role to play, but so too do individuals and families when planning and going on holiday".

"Many consumers are now making green domestic choices from sourcing electricity from renewable sources and choosing eco-friendly investments up to buying leaner and greener cars. Packing a Green Passport along with airline tickets, the swimming costume and the sun lotion means tourists no longer need to leave their green credentials at home but can make them part of the holiday of a life-time," added Mr Steiner. What is the Green Passport Campaign? The Green Passport Campaign is an initiative of the International Task Force on Sustainable Tourism Development, firmly rooted in the move to accelerate a global shift towards sustainable consumption and production (SCP) that emerged from the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD), held in Johannesburg in 2002. ?The Green Passport initiative, which to date has been introduced in Ecuador, Costa Rica, France's Overseas Territories, and South Africa where 100,000 Green Passports where distributed to visitors during the 2010 FIFA World Cup, provides a physical passport-style document packed with advice and tips on how to make a holiday more sustainable?. Brazil recently joined the Green Passport initiative at ?World Environment Day (WED) on June 1st 2012 as the Government of Brazil and the UNEP committed on changing the behavior of travelers and? tourists within and outside the country. With thousands of people arriving in Rio for the Rio+20 Summit, followed by the FIFA World Cup in 2014 and the summer Olympics in 2016, this initiative has come at a pivotal time for Brazil. How the Green Passport can work for you The Green Passport website launched in order to support this initiative. There, tourists can search for sustainably managed hotels, learn about the most environmentally-friendly form of travel, and discover restaurants that source sustainably-produced agricultural products and foods. Tourists will discover that traveling green is not as hard as they imagined on the opposite it can be a lot of fun. Here you would find some of the reasonable tips that one can find on the green passport pages. Even a small change can make a difference and bring some positive changes in your life:
When organizing your trip, make sure your money is well spent by choosing tour?? operators and hotel providers committed to sustainable tourism.? Always ask questions about? transport, accommodation, staff working conditions, waste treatment, and environmental? protection policy. Not only will you be aware of the issues, you will also make the tour operators more concerned of these questions.? Look for websites specializing in responsible traveling, ecotourism, or sustainable tourism (the Rainforest? Alliance?s Eco-Index can be very helpful in this area).
When packing, try to think carefully about what you really need to take with you. Waste disposal systems in many? countries are ill-equipped to deal with the increased pressures that tourism brings. A few simple measures can make an enormous difference to the effect you have on your destination. Where possible, remove the wrapping of packaged goods before you leave home, so that they are recycled at your own country.

Flying can be inexpensive but it is also the fastest-growing source of greenhouse gases contributing to global warming. 'Slow Travel', similar to 'Slow Food', is a new trend evolving to encourage the use of more eco-friendly transportation services. For some, this is about spending more time at a destination, mingling with people, getting to know the local flora and fauna, taking long walks and exploring, instead of rushing from one glitzy tourist trap to another. It can also include choosing not to fly, taking the time to savor experiences and landscapes along the way.

If you fly, choose an airline that is committed to sustainable aviation. There are many ways that aircraft can reduce CO2 emissions, e.g. avoiding routes with stopovers (it is during takeoff and landing that the highest emissions occur). You can also help by staying longer once you?ve reached your destination.

Motorized travel is now the major source of pollution in the tourism sector: airplanes, 4X4 vehicles, coaches, and motorbikes are the most common means of transport. Some trips are particularly polluting. For instance, aircraft or helicopter flights over Kings Canyon in Australia sometimes last only a few minutes, but the noise generated and excessive fuel consumption have a devastating effect on the ecosystem. Conversely, a balloon flight over the MacDonnell Ranges, also in Australia, is an almost magical experience and is far more respectful of the environment. Be sure to research what you are planning and choose the best options for yourself and the planet.
When selecting your meals, try local food and specialties as often as possible. By eating locally produced and organic goods you will reduce the CO2 emissions from transport and pesticides as well as help local farmers and the local economy. Learn more about the impacts of your food choices by visiting sustainabletable.org.
Consider what you are bringing with you and leaving behind in different areas. Here are the average times needed for certain ?standard? types of waste to disappear in most geographical areas:?Sheet of paper: 2-4 weeksBanana skin: 3-5 weeksPhotographic film container: 20-30 yearsShoe sole: 50-100 yearsTin can: 80-100 yearsAluminum can: 200-400 yearsPlastic stopper: 450 years

Putting theory into action

If the passport guidelines introduce a new way of travelling that challenges your perceptions, shakes you out of your comfort zone, and inspires you to enrich your soul, then the Green Passport Initiative has reached its aim. As a greener?traveller?you will not only make a contribution to other people?s lives, you might just change your own. Click here for your Green Passport! You can download it on your Smartphone or print it out; it will always be there for you whenever you go decide to go travelling.? Dare to change and don?t be shy to take this new green attitude with you to the most beautiful, interesting, and charming destinations!

UK PM's ex-media boss, friend to be charged for hacking

LONDON (Reuters) - Prime Minister David Cameron's former spin doctor and a friend who was a top executive in Rupert Murdoch's media empire are to be charged with phone hacking, a dramatic twist that may expose the UK leader to more awkward questions about his judgment.

In a decision that opens the door to a politically-charged court case, prosecutors said they would bring phone hacking charges against Andy Coulson, Cameron's former communications director, as well as against Rebekah Brooks, who oversaw Murdoch's News International and who remains a close friend of the prime minister.

"There is sufficient evidence for there to be a realistic prospect of conviction in relation to one or more offences," said Alison Levitt, Principal Legal Adviser to the Director of Public Prosecutions.

"I have concluded that a prosecution is required in the public interest."

The alleged offences were committed between 2000 and 2006 when both Coulson and Brooks served as editor of the News of the World, the salacious Sunday tabloid which Murdoch was forced to close a year ago amid public disgust at the phone hacking revelations.

If found guilty, the maximum penalty is two years in prison and/or a fine.

Among the alleged victims were two former home secretaries (interior ministers), former England soccer manager Sven-Goran Eriksson, Hollywood stars Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, former Beatle Paul McCartney and a minor member of the royal family.

Analysts and opposition lawmakers said Cameron's political reputation would be in the dock too at a time when his coalition government is struggling to kick-start an economic recovery and retain public trust.

"My view is that what happens to Andy Coulson and Rebekah Brooks reflects on David Cameron's judgment in both the appointment of Coulson and in being seen to be so close to a certain newspaper empire," Paul Farrelly, an opposition Labor lawmaker, told Reuters.

But though the trial was likely to inflict political damage on Cameron it was unlikely to be fatal to his premiership whose chances of survival depended more on the health of the British economy, Farrelly added.

Six other people, including some of the most senior former staff at the News of the World, Britain's biggest-selling Sunday tabloid until it was closed, will also be charged.

Prosecutors said they were also hoping to reveal the names of more than 600 people who they believe were hacking victims.

The eight defendants will appear at a magistrates court for a preliminary hearing on August 16.

Brooks and Coulson are also both accused of involvement in hacking the telephone of Milly Dowler, a missing schoolgirl who was later found murdered in 2002.

It was the revelation that News of the World journalists had hacked her phone, giving her parents false hope that she was alive, which triggered a furor that engulfed Murdoch's News International and led to the closure of the 168-year-old paper.

DENIALS

Both Brooks and Coulson said they would fight the allegations, and specifically denied any wrongdoing over Dowler.

"Anyone who knows me or has worked with me will know that I wouldn't - more importantly that I didn't - do anything to damage the Milly Dowler investigation," Coulson said outside his house in south London surrounded by photographers and media.

"At the News of the World we worked on behalf of the victims of crime, particularly violent crime, and the idea that I would then sit in my office dreaming up schemes to undermine investigations is simply untrue."

In her statement, Brooks, a close confidante of Murdoch, said she did not authorize, nor was aware of phone hacking.

"The charge concerning Milly Dowler is particularly upsetting not only as it is untrue but also because I have spent my journalistic career campaigning for victims of crime. I will vigorously defend these allegations," she said.

Brooks, her husband and her personal staff have already been charged with attempting to pervert the course of justice, while Coulson has been charged with perjury after he denied in an unrelated Scottish court case any knowledge of phone hacking.

Coulson resigned from the News of the World following the 2007 convictions, and took up the role as director of communications of Cameron's Conservative Party, helping to shape his campaign to become prime minister.

Critics say Cameron appointed Coulson in order to secure the backing of the journalist's former boss, Murdoch, and say the appointment showed a shocking lack of judgment.

Brooks, instantly recognizable by her long, curly red hair, was close to Cameron, socializing with him over Christmas breaks, and both were embarrassed when an inquiry into media ethics read out text messages sent between the two.

Cameron used to sign his frequent text messages to Brooks with an affectionate "LOL", which he thought stood for "lots of love". She quit her News International job at the height of the furor last July when the Dowler hacking was revealed.

Tuesday's decision to press charges is far from the end of the matter. Police have two other ongoing inquiries examining allegations that journalists hacked into computers and made corrupt payments to public officials in return for information.

Almost 50 arrests have been made as part of those inquiries which the detective in charge said on Monday had spread to include journalists from other newspaper publishers.

Majority of UK retail and distribution businesses doubtful of positive ...

24/07/2012

By Claire West

A new survey of small and medium sized companies in the UK has found that a significant majority of retail and distribution companies are not expecting events in London this summer to boost their performance this year.

The survey, commissioned by AXA Business Insurance, found that over three quarters (78 per cent) of respondents representing retail and distribution companies think the expected increase in visitors to London will have no effect whatsoever on their trading.

Moreover, 14 per cent of respondents within these sectors suggested events would have an adverse effect on trading; with only nine per cent optimistic that there would be a positive impact on their business.

Darrell Sansom, Managing Director, Direct and Partnerships at AXA Business Insurance, commented: ?Many analysts and trade authorities have forecast that events in London this summer will provide a much needed commercial injection into the UK economy. While it?s true that London-based retailers should be optimistic about the opportunity, the impact is likely to be less positive for those businesses not located in the capital.?

Respondents to the survey representing retail and distribution companies maintained a conservative outlook with regard to the growth of their business over the next six months, with only just over a third (35 per cent) expressing some sense of optimism and only seven per cent suggesting they were planning on hiring any new employees this year. A majority (64 per cent) were also forecasting a lower profit this year, compared with last.

Sansom continued: ?Despite the influx of visitors to the UK and general festivities, there is concern among retailers as to whether this will generate the surge in spending that many analysts predicted early on. The fact that so many of our nation?s high streets are peppered with local, non-London based retailers who are not predicted to see much commercial benefit from events in the capital, puts a slight damper on the whole spirit of them.?

Why Change? ? Looking At The Benefits Of Being An Organisation ...

With the challenges that businesses face today, ?an organisation that recognises the need for change, understands how to approach it ?and embraces all of the elements of change, will be an organisation that has a competitive advantage and the ability to maintain their edge.

A study carried out by IBM in 2009 on ?Making Change Work? suggested that??Eight out of ten CEOs anticipate substantial or very substantial change over the next three years, yet they rate their ability to manage change 22 percent lower than their expected need for it ? a ?change gap? that has nearly tripled since 2006.?

Whatever a business is experiencing, whether it is actively making acquisitions, re-aligning its business focus or simply operating under business as usual conditions within a challenging environment, assessing the need for change and understanding how to approach this within the organisation is essential.

It is impossible to encounter challenges and ignore the need to embrace those challenges by creating an adaptable and flexible environment through change management. This approach will create a cultural pillar within an organisation to adapt and embrace change, and managing change effectively will become an organisational core competency rather than a ?nice to have?.

A business that champions change from within and also operates as a leading Change Agent within its industry will move from just simply surviving as a business to thriving as a business.?Organisations that have a clear and strategic vision for change and communicate that vision regularly, effectively and consistently will create an organisation that has?greater certainty, confidence and engagement with its stakeholders, particularly with employees.?This in turn will lead to employee motivation and retention, which is fundamental to improved performance and business growth.

The need for change to be strategic is vitally important. It is all too easy for organisations to develop a ?fruit-salad? of reactive initiatives and ideas that causes confusion to employees and delivers an inconsistent message about the direction the organisation is moving.

A key factor in successful ?change within an organisation, is to view change as a constant opportunity to improve and transform the business. ?Often, change is looked at as a one time event that needs to be managed in isolation. This approach does not enable the business to create competitive advantage, manage risk or improve performance.

CBO Projects are Change Management experts with vast experience of delivering business transformation successfully.

If you would like to understand how we can help your business identify and navigate through a change management process, from recognising and planning the need for change, to mapping the path to deliver change within a controlled enviroment then we would love to speak to you.

Book Lists Offer Top Choices for Summer Reading - Education Week

When my kids were preschoolers, one of our favorite books was "Good Night, Moon" by Margaret Wise Brown. We loved the sing-songy rhymes of the book and its brightly colored illustrations. We read it together every night for months.

Apparently we weren't the only ones. The classic story was ranked number five on a list of Teachers' Top 100 Books for Children compiled from an 2007 online survey by the National Education Association.

The list, along with several others, provides an easy reference for age-appropriate books that parents can share with their kids to keep them moving along the path to literacy during the lazy days of summer.

The NEA lists books for all ages, including several other favorites perfect for preschoolers and kids in the younger grades: Maurice Sendak's "Where the Wild Things Are" made the grade at number two and "The Mitten" by Jan Brett was number 16. Several Dr. Seuss classics, such as "Green Eggs and Ham," "The Cat In The Hat," and "Oh! The Places You Will Go," were included.

"Junie B. Jones" by Barbara Park, which earned the number 33 spot, is perfect for the kindergarten set who will giggle at the antics of the sassy little girl and her tales of life in the early grades.

Looking for other "best of the best" lists? Then check out the 2012 Notable Children's Books list compiled by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of The American Library Association.

And here are two more sources: The New York Times' Notable Children's Books of 2010 and Publishers Weekly's Best Picture Books of 2011.

Happy reading.

HOMELESSAP

John Corker gets recognized often in Fort Worth, Texas, which isn?t hard when you?re 6-foot-7 and 280 pounds.

Folks remember him as a former NFL linebacker, as well as the driver of the No. 2 bus.

The story he likes telling, however, is about his comeback from drug addiction and homelessness.

Corker now serves on the board of the local Salvation Army, where he began his route back after a drug binge saw him forget where he parked the truck he was driving.

?People ask me how it felt to be an NFL player who competed at the highest level, and then come live in a homeless shelter,? Corker told the Associated Press. ?I tell them it was probably the greatest day of my life.?

Corker was a star linebacker at Oklahoma State, the Big 8 defensive player of the year, and played for the Oilers and the Packers on either side of a stint with the USFL?s Michigan Panthers.?But all the money he made playing football is gone, thanks to a cocaine habit.

?I was probably smoking $1,200 a day and playing pro football at the same time,? he said. ?How my heart didn?t burst, I can?t tell you that.?

He cleaned himself up enough to get a truck driving job, but stopped in Fort Worth to buy drugs, parked his truck and never saw it again, and then walked into the Salvation Army because he had no place else to go.

?I figured I?d blow off a couple days here,? he said. ?But to be inside from the elements consistently for the first time in years, it gave me the belief that I could do this. I could get my life back.?

Now, he?s helping others on his old path, working as a bus driver, raising a 4-year-old daughter and helping at the shelter that was once his home.

?I look back over my life now and say I?ve really been blessed,? he said. ?I?m not perfect, but I thank God I?m not where I used to be.?

It?s the kind of story that resonates at any time, but in the month of arrests leading up to NFL training camps, it?s worth repeating now.

newest technology computers | The IT Digest

WASHINGTON: Northwestern University researchers have made a breakthrough that could result in a computer 1 million times more power-efficient than those on the market today.

newest technology computersNorthwestern University researchers may have found a solution: an entirely new logic circuit family based on magnetic semiconductor devices. The advance could lead to logic circuits up to 1 million times more power-efficient than today?s.

Unlike traditional integrated circuits, which consist of a collection of miniature transistors operating on a single piece of semiconductor, the so-called ?spin logic circuits? utilize the quantum physics phenomenon of spin, a fundamental property of the electron.

?What we?ve developed is a device that can be configured in a logic circuit that is capable of performing all the necessary Boolean logic and can be cascaded to develop sophisticated function units,? said Bruce W. Wessels, Walter P. Murphy Professor of Materials Science and Engineering, one of the study?s authors.

?We are using ?spintronic? logic devices to successfully perform the same operations as a conventional CMOS circuits but with fewer devices and more computing power,? he explained.

Cat Helps Boy, Lorcan Dillon, Suffering From Selective Mutism Say 'I Love You' For The First Time (VIDEO)

Imagine not being able to tell your parents you love them. This is reality for 7-year-old Lorcan Dillon, who suffers from Selective mutism, the Daily Mail reports.

Selective mutism is an anxiety disorder that makes it almost impossible for Lorcan, who lives in Davyhulme in the UK, to speak to classmates and communicate his emotions to family. But all that began changing when his mother got him a cream Birman named Jessi-cat two years ago, reports the Daily Mail. The two quickly became inseparable and Lorcan has since made huge strides in overcoming his disability.

"In the past two weeks he's started communicating with people he doesn't know very well and even reads to one of the teachers now -- something he's never done before," Lorcan's mother, Jayne Dillon told the Daily Mail.

"She is a loving companion and is always interested in what Lorcan is up to," Dillon told lifewithcats.tv.

Dillon recently explained what the cat has meant to her son in a video interview with Cats Protection, a British feline welfare agency. "(Lorcan) was diagnosed when he started nursery school at three and a half. The reason I got Jessi-Cat is because pets and cats in particular are very good with children with special needs," she said.

"It is a way for Lorcan to communicate. He does speak normally at home, he does not have selective mutism with us at all in the house but he does not express his emotions. He would not say 'I love you mummy.' He just does not do it," she said in the Youtube video above.

"But with the cat he can cuddle her, he can stroke her, he can talk to her and he does say, 'I love you Jessi-Cat,' which is really nice and it is a way for him to express emotions which otherwise he would not be able to do."

As a result, both Lorcan and Jessi-cat have made the shortlist as Best Friends in the Cats Protection National Cat Awards 2012, according to the UK's Mirror. "We think all cats are special, but Jessi-Cat especially deserved a place in the final for showing what an incredible impact cats have on the lives of people of all ages," an organizer told the newspaper.

Dillon thinks that Jessi-cat will continue to help her son. If the cat wins, it could be eligible for the 'Cat of the Year' award, according to the Daily Mail.
