Jimmy Stafford isn?t used to performing live without his pre-show glass or two of red wine.
The guitarist for the Grammy-award winning band Train, whose hits include ?Drive By? and ?Meet Virginia,? always gets his head in the game with a generous pour of Cab or Merlot. (For the record, he prefers to quench his thirst after concerts with a well-chilled Chardonnay.)
But since Saturday evening?s show took place at the Charles E. Smith Center on the campus of George Washington University?a dry campus?he had to forego his essential touring ritual. ?I think this is the first show?I?ve?ever done where I?didn?t?drink wine beforehand,? he admitted.
Certainly, Stafford?s forced abstaining?didn?t?affect the energy of the show. The band performed in front of an enthusiastic, eclectic mix of college students and their middle-

aged parents, with some younger siblings thrown in for good measure. Train barreled through all of its hits, from the ubiquitously popular ?Hey, Soul Sister? to the ethereal ballad ?Drops of Jupiter,? to the Mariachi-inspired current single ?50 Ways to Say Goodbye.? Lead singer Pat Monahan not only gave us his soulful voice for the evening, but also tossed out dozens of signed t-shirts and beach balls; he also graciously posed with fans for cell phone pics and Tweets.
I caught up with Stafford, Monahan and drummer Scott Underwood backstage before their recent show on October 20, part of Colonial Days / Parents? Weekend at GWU, to chat about their successful wine line ?Save Me, San Francisco? (the moniker refers to the name of the band?s 2009 album and single.) Currently, the band produces three reds and a white in collaboration with Concannon Vineyard and winemaker James Foster of The Wine Group.

Stafford and Monahan are fellow wine geeks. (In fact, when I introduced myself before the show as a wine writer, Monahan enthusiastically declared that he?d ?be happy to talk the sh*t out of some wine.?) They were adamant about doing it right though, and not resorting to gimmicky, celebrity wines . That philosophy has certainly worked for them: Train?s wines have won gold medals at the San Francisco International Wine Competition, and the Orange County Fair Wine Competition.
Their California 37 is a fruit-forward yet intense Cabernet Sauvignon that reminds Stafford and crew of the wines they used to drink in their early days as a band; the pineapple, buttery and vanilla notes found in Calling All Angels appeals to lovers of supple, luscious Chardonnays; Drops of Jupiter is a Petit Sirah-based blend that is fruity, low in tannins and (in my opinion) works slightly chilled, as you would a Beaujolais.
Train?s latest wine is a varietal bottled Merlot called Hella Fine Merlot, with cherry and chocolate aromas and medium tannins. Stafford told me that the first three Merlots sent to him for approval were too astringently tannic; he went with door number four, a wine that?s approachable, both with and without food. In the Washington, D.C. area, you can buy Save Me San Francisco Wines at Whole Foods Markets. It?s also on the menu at Bonefish Grill, and Ruth?s Chris Steak House.
The band has other wines in the works, including Soul Sister Pinot Noir, and Sweet Rain, a semi-sweet, Moscato-based bottle. Stafford approves not only the wines, but also the names and labels. And they have recently partnered with Ghiradelli Chocolate to produce sweet pairings like Dark Cabernet, Sea Salt Almond and 72% Cacao Dark Chocolate.
A portion of all the proceeds of wine sales (and all the profits from chocolate sales) goes to help Family House, a non-profit guest house in San Francisco that provides temporary housing to families of patients at the UCSF Benioff Children?s Hospital.

Gina Loret Mayborn, 55, of California Valley was arrested Sunday, July 8, 2012, on suspicion of murder. Original story ?

A woman who said she shot and killed a man to save her husband in the California Valley in July pleaded no contest Monday to involuntary manslaughter.
Originally charged with murder, Gina Loret Mayborn, 56, entered her plea with a stipulation that she will receive a one-year jail term and five years of probation.
On July 8, Mayborn said Joseph King Cochran, 49, was arguing with her husband, Douglas Chadwick, who was Cochran?s stepfather.
?In a moment of clarity, I just knew that Cochran was going to kill my husband,? she allegedly told detectives.
When Cochran wielded a shovel, Mayborn said, she warned him. When he threw the shovel at Chadwick, Mayborn fired a 20-gauge shotgun through a bedroom window. Mayborn said she aimed for Cochran?s shoulder area, but pieces of the bullet hit Cochran?s neck.
?It?s been our position from the very beginning that Ms. Mayborn did not commit a malicious or premeditated act here,? said her attorney, Earl E. Conaway III. ?At no time was she trying to kill Mr. Cochran.?
Mayborn later told police she thought it was a sober decision and the right thing to do.
In the past, Cochran had threatened to kill Chadwick and Mayborn numerous times, Chadwick told police.
?He had threatened both of them that day,? Conaway said.
Mayborn was arrested and initially charged with murder. But Monday ? the day she was to have a preliminary hearing ? she formally accepted a plea to the lesser charge. A no-contest plea results in a conviction without an admission of guilt.
Involuntary manslaughter most commonly refers to unintentional homicides that occur during the commission of non-felony crimes or reckless conduct during lawful activities.
In addition to her involuntary manslaughter conviction, Mayborn also admitted to an enhancement of using a firearm. If she violates her probation, she would be subject to 14 years in prison.
But Mayborn, who has no prior convictions for violent crime, is not at-risk for violating probation, Conaway said.
She will be formally sentenced in San Luis Obispo Superior Court on Dec. 5.
Had she been convicted of murder, Mayborn would have faced a possible life sentence. Instead, Mayborn, who has been in jail since July, is expected to be released in January.
?It?s a family tragedy,? Conaway said. ?But I think she?s happy she?s not going to prison for the rest of her life.?
Alan Milburn?s report on Higher Education did not receive the attention Anna Zimdars suggests it deserved. In this post she offers an overview of the report and an initial analysis of its key claims. Among other pertinent aspects, it?places the long neglected issue of postgraduate education at the heart of the widening participation agenda. The report challenges those?within higher education to rethink the purpose of the public university.?
The 18th of October saw the publication of Alan Milburn?s report on Higher Education, ?University Challenge: How Higher Education Can Advance Social Mobility?.? This is an important report and I was somewhat disappointed to see it was not the overarching daily top news story despite the good coverage on the Today programme. I certainly have not been so excited about reading something for a long time ? move over, Harry Potter and Twilight.
My own research has concerned admission to the University of Oxford and to the English legal Bar. Against this background, I find much to like in Alan Milburn?s welcome report on university and social mobility. My three report favourites are:
1)????? endorsement of contextual data in undergraduate admission.
2)????? emphasis on postgraduate study
3)????? reference to regional variations in higher education participation as an area for public policy.
It seems to be the right thing to consider evidence-based information about students? educational context when universities make offers to applicants. Of course, using contextual data requires robust and valid empirical analyses, and the report recognizes this ? another welcome emphasis and good news for social researchers: there is a need to provide a much thicker evidence base for a lot of current policy work in higher education e.g. university outreach initiatives. Might we see the creation of some new jobs in social research or in institutional research? Or is this unfounded optimism?
The detailed report then shows how the rationale or philosophy of entire admissions systems can differ (Chapter 5). Drawing on US research, the report considers how US Ivy league universities embrace the diversity of their student body as a legitimate objective of the learning and student experience they provide, drawing on the work of Harry Brighouse?&?Adam Swift and Tom Espenshade. I would have thought that although the US Ivies are private institutions ? which contrasts with the status of the UK Russell Group ? there is no reason in principle why we could not endorse diversity as an educational objective this side of the Atlantic alongside the use of contextual data. This makes sense for the education experience of students as well as for society (see also Nussbaum). In fact, just this week I asked my new tutees how they had enjoyed their first seminar this year. And, what was the most fun?? The ?variety of experiences of participants? and ?hearing different points of view?. This allows for reflection that aside from the necessary government emphasis on the labour market returns to education, isn?t it priceless to offer an educational experience which can transform an individual?s way of viewing the world? It might seem like a romantic view of education but the business case for diversity is also well developed.
A seminal piece of research which, unfortunately, did not feature in this report, has attempted to capture the social utility of diversity as an admissions criterion and concluded that embracing diversity led to a wide array of social benefits (William Bowen and Derek Bok, 1999: The shape of the river).? I would have thus welcomed an even more radical endorsement of diversity in this report. However for the real policy world of admission, focusing on contextual data and accreditation of prior learning might be a more feasible starting point and is welcome.
Secondly, I am thrilled to see that postgraduate education is moving towards centre-stage in the report. With undergraduate degrees now often being ?necessary but insufficient? conditions for certain career entries, the focus on the interaction of postgraduate study with social background is most welcome ? indeed a ?lack of access to postgraduate study is in danger of becoming a social mobility time bomb? (p. 6).
One of the theoretical issues surrounding postgraduate education implicitly shining through in the report, concerns the unresolved question whether educational opportunities are ?spilling over? or ?deferred selection? takes place. In other words, as we aim towards greater inclusion in undergraduate education, the benign hope is that any increase in opportunities will simply spill over into a more diverse student body at postgraduate level. In this model, graduates then also enjoy the same labour market outcomes regardless of background as their meritocratic credentials spill over into the labour market.
A more malign interpretation is that an era of credential inflation, heightened by a recession, could lead to deferred selection taking place and that all the sorts of things policy interventions attempt to neutralize ? like ability to pay and other factors beyond individuals? control ? matter again for postgraduate entry and entry to certain professions. Milburn highlighted some of these aspects in his Access to Professions report with regards to the role of unpaid internships in accessing some professions. This is an area where there is a need for empirical researchers and theorists to continue developing our understanding and communicating our findings with policy audiences.
Geography is another area where awareness of differences in university access can be a useful step towards redressing them ? ideally when combined with developments in technology enhanced learning.
This segue ways into considering the figurative dog that is not barking ? or not loud enough ? in my view: disability and universality.
Well-designed technology-enhanced learning can benefit learners in different ways, but it can be exceptionally useful for students with disabilities. This is as long as accessibility considerations are an integral part of digital provision. A university-led discourse of diversity and inclusion and an expansion of the implicit notion of the normal students would be welcomed.
Universality covers two aspects: access to universally good schools and universal links between universities and schools. I was pleased to see the first point addressed in the report by stating that ?in an ideal world, all schools would be of a uniformly high standard and universities could simply select students on the basic of actual academic achievement??and that ?sadly, this is not the case.?? (p. 49)? I think it is crucial to remember that making allowances for imperfect educational contexts is the tree.?Good education for all is the wood sometimes missed because of all the trees. Indeed, the UK evidence-base showing support for universally good schools as preferable to a choice plethora of schools with too divergent educational experiences is growing.
Secondly, universality requires consideration when rolling out outreach schemes. Many schemes are due to the nature of the targeted mentoring small scale. But it would seem undesirable to introduce a new dimension of ?inequality of opportunity to outreach opportunities? to the list of inequalities students can encounter.
To conclude, Alan Milburn asks the university sector to step up and take greater responsibility for aspects of social mobility through education.? This is an opportunity for the university sector to take on a leadership role and to rethink and re-imagine aspects of the mission of public universities.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. ? Chiefs coach Romeo Crennel felt he finally had little choice but to make a quarterback change for his stumbling 1-5 team.
Amid a slightly brewing quarterback controversy fueled more by starter Matt Cassel's ineffectiveness than by backup Brady Quinn's potential, Crennel announced Monday that Quinn was the new starter heading into Sunday's game at Arrowhead against Oakland.
"During my evaluation and (while) trying to impact the team," Crennel said, "I kind of felt that probably the most impactful move that I could make to get everybody?s attention was to change the quarterback. I think that will get everybody?s attention, and hopefully that impacts the team because the quarterback position, that?s the one that has the spotlight on it."
Cassel's fall from grace happened rather quickly after his Pro Bowl season in 2010 when he helped lead the Chiefs to the playoffs. A hand injury derailed his season in week 10 in 2011, and this season has been nothing short of a disaster for Cassel. He committed 14 turnovers, including nine interceptions, during the Chiefs' first five games, four of which were losses.
"I am not saying that Matt Cassel is the reason we are where we are because that brush, that stroke of that brush, is a broad stroke and everybody is included in it," Crennel said. "...but my biggest deal was my gut telling me that I needed to impact the team by changing the dynamic, by having a different dynamic, and Brady Quinn is the guy that I want to go with."
Crennel's quarterback change ends some of the speculation on sports-talk radio in Kansas City which suggested that general manager Scott Pioli was dictating position decisions to Crennel, especially at quarterback. Pioli acquired Cassel, who had been Tom Brady's backup with New England, in a trade in 2009, then signed him to a six-year, $62 million deal.
Cassel, though, now will have to adjust again to being a backup. Crennel indicated Monday he wasn't about to have a short trigger with Quinn.
"I want (Quinn) to be the starting quarterback without having to look over his shoulder," Crennel said, "so there is going to be no quick hook or anything like that."
Cassel, talking to reporters after practice Monday, appeared subdued but said he respected the decision.
"Am I going to say I'm happy about the situation? Absolutely not," Cassel said. "I'm frustrated. But I'm a team captain on this team and I care about this team. I'm a big boy and I'm not going to hang my head. I'm going to work hard like I always have.
"My role has changed and my role is to help Brady Quinn get ready to play. That's my role as a team captain and that's what I'll do."
Cassel and Quinn were informed of the switch at about 12:30 p.m. Monday, prior to practice. Cassel said he did not try to change Crennel's mind by making a case for himself.
"It's a fruitless situation because Romeo has made his decision and again, I can bitch and complain, but at the same time it is what it is," Cassel said. "I'll move forward and this team will move forward.
"He told me exactly what the situation was. As a player, I'm not happy with it. But I'll support Brady."
Cassel has been the target of intensifying fan criticism during the Chiefs' horrendous start this season. He also was at the center of controversy two weeks ago when he suffered a concussion against the Ravens at Arrowhead, and offensive tackle Eric Winston sounded off against Chiefs fans he felt were cheering Cassel's injury.
And despite his poor play, Cassel said he didn't think he was in jeopardy of losing his job.
"I can't say I saw it coming," Cassel said. "But when you're 1-5, and when you're team's struggling, your coach wants to find a way to spark the team. He felt this was the best thing to do.
"I've been in this role four or five years before so I'll just continue to work hard. You're not going to take the fight out of me. If the opportunity comes up again I'll be ready to compete."
Quinn, who started prior to the bye week in a 38-10 loss to Tampa Bay, chose his words carefully as he spoke with the media after Crennel's decision.
Quinn said he wasn't sure what his strengths are as the new Chiefs quarterback.
"I don't know," he said. "I couldn't tell you right now. I really haven't played enough to know right now."
Now, though, Quinn will be in a similar situation as Cassel was ? the pressure rests on him to rescue the Chiefs' season.
"There's always pressure," he said. "Pressure is what you make it. Quarterbacks get used to the pressure. I think we do a good job with our coaching staff in terms of getting our players to focus on what's in front of us and not what's going on outside (the team)."

This week, October 22-28, marks Open Access Week, a global event that brings various parties together to discuss, publicize and advocate for open access. On October 23, leading open access journal PLOS Biology publishes an editorial that aims to direct this year's discussion towards the need to focus on the reusability of, and not just access to, the research literature.
With the incredible rise in the number of open access research papers available online, it is now time to focus on ensuring that we can make the most out of that access, argues Cameron Neylon, Advocacy Director at PLOS and author of the editorial.
"If we are to exploit the potential that open access provides," writes Neylon, "we must look beyond just making research findings accessible to ensuring that they are legally and technically available for re-use." Many journals that currently claim to publish 'open access' research actually withhold rights such as re-use, particularly commercial re-use, under the terms of their licence. This, says Neylon, is at odds with the idea of open access, and must be addressed if we are to make full use of open research. "Mere access is not enough to deliver on the promise of a truly network-enabled research communication system," he says.

This week, October 22-28, marks Open Access Week, a global event that brings various parties together to discuss, publicize and advocate for open access. On October 23, leading open access journal PLOS Biology publishes an editorial that aims to direct this year's discussion towards the need to focus on the reusability of, and not just access to, the research literature.
With the incredible rise in the number of open access research papers available online, it is now time to focus on ensuring that we can make the most out of that access, argues Cameron Neylon, Advocacy Director at PLOS and author of the editorial.
"If we are to exploit the potential that open access provides," writes Neylon, "we must look beyond just making research findings accessible to ensuring that they are legally and technically available for re-use." Many journals that currently claim to publish 'open access' research actually withhold rights such as re-use, particularly commercial re-use, under the terms of their licence. This, says Neylon, is at odds with the idea of open access, and must be addressed if we are to make full use of open research. "Mere access is not enough to deliver on the promise of a truly network-enabled research communication system," he says.

Salk discovery may help doctors slow progression and recurrence of brain cancer
LA JOLLA, CA---- Scientists have long believed that glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), the most aggressive type of primary brain tumor, begins in glial cells that make up supportive tissue in the brain or in neural stem cells. In a paper published October 18 in Science Express, however, researchers at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies have found that the tumors can originate from other types of differentiated cells in the nervous system, including cortical neurons.
GBM is one of the most devastating brain tumors that can affect humans. Despite progress in genetic analysis and classification, the prognosis of these tumors remains poor, with most patients dying within one to two years of diagnosis. The Salk researcher's findings offer an explanation for the recurrence of GBM following treatment and suggest potential new targets to treat these deadly brain tumors.
"One of the reasons for the lack of clinical advances in GBMs has been the insufficient understanding of the underlying mechanisms by which these tumors originate and progress," says Inder Verma, a professor in Salk's Laboratory of Genetics and the Irwin and Joan Jacobs Chair in Exemplary Life Science.
To better understand this process, Verma's team harnessed the power of modified viruses, called lentiviruses, to disable powerful tumor suppressor genes that regulate the growth of cells and inhibit the development of tumors. With these tumor suppressors deactivated, cancerous cells are given free rein to grow out of control.
To do that, Verma and his colleagues attached small RNA molecules, known as short hairpin RNAs, to the modified viruses and injected them directly into very few cells in the brains of genetically engineered mice that express an enzyme known as CRE specifically in neurons, astrocytes or neural stem cells. The modified viruses target two genes----neurofibromatosis 1 (NF1) and p53----that, when mutated, are implicated in severe gliomas like GBM. Using sophisticated analytical techniques, they discovered that neurons genetically converted by the lentiviruses that also produce green fluorescent protein (GFP) as a marker to track the progression of tumors are capable of forming malignant gliomas.
Because the origin of glioblastomas from neurons has not been previously reported, the Salk scientists provided further evidence that mature neurons can be transformed by these oncogenes by isolating cortical neurons from genetically engineered mice and transducing them with one of the lentiviruses. The neurons that were transplanted back into the mice developed the same tumors as the ones in the laboratory.
"Our findings," says lead author Dinorah Friedmann-Morvinski, a postdoctoral researcher in the Laboratory of Genetics, "suggest that, when two critical genes----NF-1 and p53----are disabled, mature, differentiated cells acquire the capacity to reprogram [dedifferentiate] to a neuroprogenitor cell-like state, which can not only maintain their plasticity, but also give rise to the variety of cells observed in malignant gliomas."
If scientists can block the process of dedifferentiation or proliferation of dedifferentiated neuroprogenitor cells, they may be able to stop tumor progression. That's important in an aggressive disease like GBM because of its high rate of recurrence.
"Our results offer an explanation of recurrence of gliomas following treatment," says Verma, "because any tumor cell that is not eradicated can continue to proliferate and induce tumor formation, thereby perpetuating the cycle of continuous cell replication to form malignant gliomas."
The scientists say the tumors in their mouse model are similar to GBMs that affect humans. Because they have the same pathology and characteristic genetic signature, scientists can study potential therapies in mice that should, theoretically, work in humans. While they may not eradicate GBM, these therapies may slow the progression of the disease and improve patients' quality of life.

I started writing this post about a month ago, and I stopped writing and almost forgot about it. But yesterday I read from the October 8th, 2012 issue of Christian News a response to Christianity Today?s ?50 Women You Should Know.? As a response to CT?s list that included the false prophet Joyce Meyer, CN came out with their list of the Most Influential Women. Among the women mentioned were my mother and my grandmother who both had a significant number of children. I appreciated that article, not so much because it mentioned by mother and grandmother, but rather because it hit on an issue, which we would do well to remember. It hit on the issue that there are concrete vocations that God has created and in which He is well-pleased.
So I was motivated to finish this post about family and motherhood. We can make a giant list of Christian vocations, that is, if we define vocation in a broad enough way. However, the vocation of motherhood is a vocation that we know from God?s Word that He has actually instituted. I hope this post will give encouragement to all Christian women and really to all Christians.
Why is motherhood so important? That?s simple. God ordained it. God gave Eve to Adam, and He told them to be fruitful and multiply. His blessings to women have never stopped since. For the sake of explanation, I would like to share some information about my mother and family.
My mother truly is a gift from God. In fact, her name is Dorothy. If God blesses me with a daughter, I will point her to her grandmother as a great example. She nurtured me with my daily bread and with the Bread of Life; she taught me the gospel. She raised me in the true faith and teaching of Christ. She submitted to my father, because God told her to, yet she did not trust in her submission. She trusted God who justifies her through faith in His Son, and who promised her that He would save her from sin and death as she bore the task He gave her to bare and rear all those children.
From my mother, God gave me ten brothers and one sister. I love all of my brothers. I could not ask for better fraternal companionship and loyalty. I miss each of them every day, and I look forward to the day that I can see at least one of them and enjoy the friendship I too often took for granted when I was young (pardon my personal sentiments and ?shout outs.?). It is so appropriate that my parents decided to call my one sister Mary. Mary is not only the name of my sister. Mary is also the name of another mother, whom I call blessed.
Mary is the name of my God?s mother. If God blesses me with any daughters, I will show them Mary as a great example. She submitted to her husband, because it was God?s will. And all the while, she trusted God who justified her through faith in His Son and her Son who suffered for her sin. She trusted her Son, Brother, and Lord, who put Himself under the same law that justly condemned her. She did not find herself worthy, but She trusted in the same God who promised to save her through childbearing. She did not show Him all her marvelous works as if that would grant her anything. Instead of that, she confessed that God exalts the lowly. St. Cyril of Alexandria confessed that she was the God-bearer. This was not to exalt Mary to some kind of divinity. No, this was to emphasize that the Man Jesus was true God. So because Christ is the Life of all the living, Mary, by the grace of God, received the title given to Eve by her husband Adam after he heard the promise of her seed. The title she received was the mother of all the living.
And the fruit of her womb Jesus is my Brother because He not only claimed my flesh, but He put Himself under the same Law that justly condemns my flesh. Being condemned in my place, He proved Himself righteous for my sake when He was raised and vindicated by the Holy Spirit, who judges the world in righteousness. He called me by my name, just as I learned at such at young age:
I am Jesus? little lamb. Ever glad at heart I am. For my shepherd gently guides me, Knows my needs and well provides me, Loves me every day the same, Even calls me by my name.
He united His Name to mine ? and thus the whole Trinity?s Name to mine ? when He baptized me, and through faith in His Name, I share the companionship, the love, the loyalty, and the care of my Brother Jesus Christ. Jesus is my Brother and my Lord, and the Brother born of Mary remains the basis for the love and companionship I share with all my earthly brothers and sister.
And for those who are barren, even for those women who never get married, through faith in their Lord Jesus Christ, they bear much fruit, because that is what God has promised. Listen to the Holy Spirit who speaks through the prophet Isaiah (54:1-8):
?Sing, O barren one, who did not bear; break forth into singing and cry aloud, you who have not been in labor! For the children of the desolate one will be more than the children of her who is married,? says the LORD. ?Enlarge the place of your tent, and let the curtains of your habitations be stretched out; do not hold back; lengthen your cords and strengthen your stakes. For you will spread abroad to the right and to the left, and your offspring will possess the nations and will people the desolate cities. ?Fear not, for you will not be ashamed; be not confounded, for you will not be disgraced; for you will forget the shame of your youth, and the reproach of your widowhood you will remember no more. For your Maker is your husband, the LORD of hosts is his name; and the Holy One of Israel is your Redeemer, the God of the whole earth he is called. For the LORD has called you like a wife deserted and grieved in spirit, like a wife of youth when she is cast off, says your God. For a brief moment I deserted you, but with great compassion I will gather you. In overflowing anger for a moment I hid my face from you, but with everlasting love I will have compassion on you,? says the LORD, your Redeemer.
The barren and childless should not concern themselves with how much service they might give their God. Their service is made perfect when God?s strength is made perfect. And God?s strength is made perfect through weakness (2 Cor 12:9). It is through suffering that He produces endurance and hope, and hope does not put us to shame (Rom 5:3-5). So for you women who say, ?What about us who don?t have children,? stop kidding yourself! You have God?s promise. He blesses you more than you can imagine. Don?t look at God?s blessings in terms of outward circumstances. Take God?s promises for what they are worth, because Jesus tells you what they are worth. You who trust your Savior Jesus ? even counting the God-given gift of your family as nothing that can save you ? remember Jesus? promise that you will receive a hundredfold now in this time, houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands, with persecutions, and in the age to come eternal life (Mark 10:29-30).
We have the promise of these blessings hidden under persecution. The persecution is not simply outward beatings and ridicule. It is a spiritual attack. But all the while, our faith finds its sustenance not in its own perseverance, but in the death and resurrection of Christ, in His obedience which in and of itself bears abundant fruit. This was the obedience He gave fully to His mother and earthly father, the obedience that He rendered to His eternal Father even unto death. This is the obedience He credits to us by His resurrection, and which He applies to us by His gospel through faith in His Name.
My mother is saved not because of all the children she had. She is saved because of the promise in which she trusted, the promise of God that she will bear fruit, fruit that is pleasing to Him for the sake of Christ?s obedience. And by such promise, she is saved through her childbearing (1 Tim 2:15).
Therefore we don?t despise childbearing for the sake of man-made vocations. Rather, we extol childbearing as a great gift and noble calling. And we take comfort and have confidence in God?s promise that those who are united to Jesus Christ the Vine will bare abundant fruit (John 15:5).
May God bless all Christian mothers and comfort all Christian women who trust in the God who justifies the ungodly and never breaks His promises.

?If this is the age of tolerance,? Daigle said, ?why aren?t we being heard? We are not threatening to harm anybody. We are not saying you should be in jail for any of this, but what we are saying is this degrades the foundation of the family and society, promotes diseases and dysfunction and tears down the person?s dignity.?
Daigle said she wanted to meet in her church and sit where she could see the cross behind the pulpit. Litalien had a rosary wrapped around one hand. She said she leans on her faith, prays on a regular basis and knows that God meant for men and women to be together in marriage, not same-sex couples.
?When people say they don?t see how it?s wrong, I say to them if you can show me in the Bible where God says it?s right, then I will agree with you,? Terrill said.
The sisters said that as much as they hear that gays and lesbians are discriminated against, it feels now that those who oppose same-sex marriage are the ones being treated with bias. Terrill said she lost a job over her views, and Litalien worries about saying where she lives for fear of retaliation.
?We are now the ones being forced into the shadows,? Daigle said. She said Maine voters decided the issue once when a citizen referendum overturned state legislation legalizing same-sex marriage.
?So, why are we doing this again?? Daigle asked. ?We didn?t bring this to them; they brought it to us. No means no.?
Many simply don?t dare to speak up for fear of being labeled hateful, Daigle said.
?Do you know how much courage it takes to go out in front of people and put up signs not to redefine marriage?? she asked. ?How much courage it takes to put it on the back of your car? You could have your windows broken.?
They know some in the Christian Civic League who have applied for and been granted concealed weapon permits because they faced death threats and other types of harassment.
?I?m not going to say all of them, but there is a radical segment ? just like someone can say it?s radical Muslims, there?s only a section of them ? there?s a radical segment of pro same-sex people that are extremely radical, and they will stop at nothing to get what they want,? Daigle said. ?Those are the ones that are forcing us into the shadows.?
The sisters say they want people to know they don?t hate gay people.
Litalien told a story of how a gay couple she knew helped her find a religious film for her grandson after the child was recovering from an illness that left him near death.
?We love them as a person, but we don?t have to agree with their lifestyle; but we love them as a person,? Litalien said.
She, Terrill and Daigle are among seven siblings including two other sisters and two brothers. They said the whole family was raised going to church. Although they now practice different versions of Christianity, they said they all believe in the same God.
?We are crying foul because anyone who disapproves of the lifestyle is being told they hate (gays and lesbians),? Litalien said. ?We are Christians and we are commanded to love. And my heart breaks for them being encouraged to stay in a harmful lifestyle that degrades the body and corrupts the soul. But we have no right to hate them and no right to tell them what they can and cannot do, but on that same note, we don?t have to accept same-sex marriage as normal and natural.?

I started writing this post about a month ago, and I stopped writing and almost forgot about it. But yesterday I read from the October 8th, 2012 issue of Christian News a response to Christianity Today?s ?50 Women You Should Know.? As a response to CT?s list that included the false prophet Joyce Meyer, CN came out with their list of the Most Influential Women. Among the women mentioned were my mother and my grandmother who both had a significant number of children. I appreciated that article, not so much because it mentioned by mother and grandmother, but rather because it hit on an issue, which we would do well to remember.
