Oil, gas drilling leases increase in Stark, Portage counties

Leases for oil and natural gas drilling in Stark and Portage counties increased in 2011.

More leases were filed in December for oil and gas drilling in the underground shale deposits in Stark County than in the rest of 2011, the Akron Beacon Journal reports.

From January to November, the county recorded 2,165 such leases, the newspaper reports.

The 4,563 total oil and gas drilling leases set a new record for the county and were more than four times as many as the 1,113 that were filed in 2010, the newspaper reports. Nearby Portage County saw the number of oil and gas leases increase to 2,202 in 2011 from 1,309 in 2010, the newspaper reports.
