Exercise is one of the best activities that anyone can begin.? There are many benefits to exercising, but one of the most dreaded results of exercise is soreness.? Delayed-Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS) is the official term used to describe the soreness experienced 24-48 hours after exercise.? Soreness after working out is often known as ?good soreness? or some will say ?no pain, no gain?, but this is not always the case.? Although some pain is expected after exercise, not all pain is good pain.

Soreness after exercise or DOMS was once thought to be a result of lactic acid build up, but is now scientifically known to be a result of micro-tears in muscle and inflammation in muscle tissue from strenuous exercise. ?In the world of health and fitness, some pain from exercising is expected, but you must develop a barometer or measuring system in regard to the level of DOMS that you are comfortable with.? If the level of DOMS that you experience is far too intense for your level of comfort, there are a few things you can do to minimize the level of soreness that you experience 24-48 hours after exercise is complete.

Tips for avoiding Delayed-Onset Muscle Soreness

Take your time in achieving your goal

• If you attempt to achieve your goal overnight, chances are that you are putting more resistance on your body than it can handle, which can result in intense soreness and an increased risk of injury
• Use lighter resistance during your workout
• Decrease the intensity of your workout

Cool down after exercise

• After finishing the last repetition of your workout, do not just hop of the piece of exercise equipment and walk out the door
• Do a cool down workout to return you heart rate to its resting heart rate before officially declaring? your workout complete
• At a minimum, stretch the muscle groups that were included in your workout
• Stretch each muscle group for a minimum of 30 seconds to lengthen muscles and increase the rate of ?recovery

Muscle soreness is a byproduct of exercise, especially if you are new to fitness and/or beginning a new exercise routine, but the level of pain should not be unbearable. Develop a rate of pain that you are comfortable with experiencing 24-48 hours after exercise, if you do not meet that level of soreness, you can either increase or decrease your level of intensity, depending on your specific goal. Remember, there is no sure way to avoid muscle soreness after exercise but you can decrease the level of pain experienced.

Eye On Oshkosh: BOARD DESIGNATES FINALIST FOR ...

Stan Mack from Minneapolis was designated as the sole finalist for the position of superintendent of the Oshkosh Area School District at a special board meeting on Tuesday morning. Mack currently is Executive Director of the Minnesota Board of School Administrators, which is the licensure organization for school administrators in Minnesota. Prior to assuming that position in 2009, Mack was the superintendent of the 12,350 student Robbinsdale Area School District in suburban Minneapolis for nine years. Prior to Robbinsdale, Mack served as assistant superintendent in two large districts in suburban Minneapolis, for eight years in the Osseo Area Schools with 22,000 students and for four years with the Burnsville, Eagan, Savage School District with 10,000 students. Mack started his educational career in the South Saint Paul Schools as a Special Education Teacher and then Director of Special Services. He left South Saint Paul to assume responsibilities as superintendent of the Eveleth Area Schools and Eveleth Technical College and then as superintendent of the Northfield Area Schools.

Mack received his bachelor?s degree from Minnesota State University, Mankato, majoring in political science and his master?s degree from the University of Minneapolis with a major in educational psychology. He currently is completing his doctorate at the University of Minnesota with a major in education policy and administration. He anticipates receipt of the doctorate in 2013.

In his current position, Mack is responsible for overseeing the preparation, licensing and standards development for school principals, superintendents, directors of special education and directors of community education in the state of Minnesota, as well as investigating all allegations of unethical behavior among administrators currently licensed. As superintendent of the Robbinsdale District, Mack focused on the needs of a diverse student body, instruction, facilities and finances. During the course of Mack? s nine years in the Robbinsdale School District, he initiated the change from a curricular based instructional program to a standards based instructional program, led and supervised the renovation of thirteen district schools, and the construction of a new elementary school. While there, he worked with the Board to develop a strategic plan that improved instruction and facilitated the reorganization of the district to make it more cost effective.

Upon appointment, Mack will establish his residence in Oshkosh. He is married and the father of three grown sons. His wife, Margaret, is a middle school principal. His twin sons will be entering their junior years of studies at the University of Chicago and the University of Minnesota. His oldest son is a graduate of Saint John?s University and is a technology/information systems manager for a Minneapolis technology firm.

Mack emerged as the sole finalist after the Board conducted a national search for the replacement of Superintendent Don Viegut who has accepted the position of administrator for Cooperative Educational Service Agency 8. With the assistance of Hazard, Young, Attea & Associates, a Chicago based school executive search firm, 26 individuals were identified as possible candidates for the position. The search firm identified five individuals that best met the Board?s criteria for the position and presented them to the Board for consideration. After meeting with the five individuals during the past week, the Board unanimously agreed that Mack had the strongest background and experience base to address the needs of the Oshkosh Area Schools and determined to identify one finalist for the position. School Board President John Lemberger, who was engaged in the past three searches for superintendents in Oshkosh, noted that the slate interviewed this year was the strongest slate he feels the Board has seen for the position, but that Mack?s successful experience in many areas that paralleled Oshkosh?s needs caused the Board to focus on him as the preferred candidate.

The Board anticipates employing Mack upon completing due diligence which includes additional reference checking, a comprehensive background check by an independent investigative firm and
agreement on an employment contract.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Facebook's stock has fallen below $30 for the first time since its much-awaited public debut this month.

The stock fell $2.40, or nearly 8 percent, to $29.40 in midday trading on Tuesday. That's down 23 percent since its public stock debut. It went as low as $29.23 earlier in the day.

Facebook Inc. began trading publicly on May 18 following one of the most anticipated stock offerings in history.

The site, which was born in a dorm room eight years ago and has grown into a worldwide network of almost a billion people, was supposed to offer proof that social media is a viable business and more than a passing fad.

Facebook's initial public offering of stock priced at $38 and raised $16 billion for Facebook and some of its early investors. It had valued the company at $104 billion ? more than Amazon.com Inc., at $98 billion, at the time.

But the stock's public debut was marred by technical glitches at the Nasdaq Stock Market that delayed trading.

And the company, along with the investment banks that led the IPO, is the subject of at least two shareholder lawsuits. They allege that analysts at the large underwriting investment banks cut their second-quarter and full-year forecasts for Facebook just before the IPO and told only a handful of clients. Morgan Stanley has declined to comment. Facebook calls the lawsuits "without merit."

With the latest drop, Facebook's value is about $80 billion.

Celtics woeful in Game 1 loss. Can they beat the Heat?

The Heat dismantled the Boston Celtics Monday night in the first game of their Eastern Conference Finals matchup. The loss now leaves the Celtics looking for answers in solving Miami's twin threat of LeBron James, and Dwyane Wade.

Miami's LeBron James was having a lot of fun during Monday night?s game; so much so, in fact, that at one point he?couldn't help but snicker?in the face of Boston Celtics forward Kevin Garnett.

It was an embarrassing and telling moment for a proud Celtics team that could manage only a meager 79 points in losing the first game of the Eastern Conference Finals to the Heat, 93-79, at American Airlines Arena in Miami. With such a poor performance, Boston has made it all too easy for critics to suggest that the Celtics, particularly as Garnett and Ray Allen?s contracts are up this season, may not make it to another Eastern Conference championship, let alone another ring to go with 2008?s NBA title.

Boston?s ?three musketeers? of Garnett, Allen and Paul Pierce ? along with their ?D?Artagnan? in the person of Rajon Rondo ? have already been hobbled with injuries to Pierce, Allen, and guard Avery Bradley. But Monday night they suffered the additional disadvantage and indignity?of two technical fouls and a delay of game penalty in the first period that ignited the Heat as well as their home fans and short-circuited any attempts by the Celtics to gain momentum. As it turned out, they scored only 11 points in the first period, but did manage to regain some equilibrium to tie the Heat, 46-46 at the half.

James led all scorers with 32 points and 13 rebounds, complemented by Dwyane Wade?s 22 points and seven assists. The Celtics, by comparison, couldn?t find the basket; they were a collective 11-21 from the free-throw line, and the trio of Pierce, Allen and Rondo hit only 14 of 45 attempted field goals. Part of the reason for this was Miami?s blocked shots: a total of twelve, which is one short of their franchise record. The Heat also out-rebounded Boston, 48-33.

The Celtics have come to expect, if not fully depend on Rondo to manage their offense; as he performs, so does Boston. In the course of attaining nine playoff triple-doubles, he?s piled up the assists from quickly surveying the opponents? defense and outlet-passing to teammates either on the perimeter or in the post.

But last night, he was prevented from making another breakout by the tight defense of James and guard Mario Chalmers. Rondo was only 8-of-20 from the field, and though he did score 16 points, was held to only seven assists and no free throws.

Boston coach Doc Rivers, who asserted after the game that he admires Rondo?s aptitude and intelligence on the court, suggested that Rondo was not being intuitive enough in solving Miami?s defense.

According to Rivers, ?He?s got to be on the attack ? I thought he was reading a lot instead of playing on his instincts. I think sometimes his I.Q. hurts him. You can?t read and play at speed at the same time."

Rondo, for his part, said afterward that he felt the Celtics could be more physical with the Heat. He wasn?t?intimating that the Celtics might intentionally injure Miami?s players, but hinted that some Heat players might have to ?hit the deck? more as the series progresses.

The Celtics are as keenly aware as anyone that in order to get back on track with Miami they will have to score much more than they did Monday night. Simply put, if you don?t score, you don?t win.

Rarely has solid defense been enough to get a team a victory if they score only 79 points. If Boston can?t break the James and Wade juggernaut soon, they will most definitely exit within five games. The Celtics have switched to a zone defense against the Heat to some success in the past, but that strategy also carries risks: Wade?s and James? athleticism in driving through it, and their superior brand of perimeter shooting.

The Celtics, in contrast, need to drive the lane and use the absence of Miami?s Chris Bosh to take greater advantage of the post. Aside from the obvious benefit of giving Boston more high percentage shots, this conceivably could drive up the Heat?s personal fouls. In short, Boston will have to take the game directly to Miami?s strengths. There really is little alternative for them at this point.

PITTSBURGH (AP) ? Imagine a tiny snake robot crawling through your body, helping a surgeon identify diseases and perform operations.

It's not science fiction. Scientists and doctors are using the creeping metallic tools to perform surgery on hearts, prostate cancer, and other diseased organs. The snakebots carry tiny cameras, scissors and forceps, and even more advanced sensors are in the works. For now, they're powered by tethers that humans control. But experts say the day is coming when some robots will roam the body on their own.

"It won't be very long before we have robots that are nanobots, meaning they will actually be inside the body without tethers," said Dr. Michael Argenziano, the Chief of Adult Cardiac Surgery at New York-Presbyterian Hospital and Columbia University Medical Center in New York.

Argenziano was involved with some of the first U.S. Food and Drug Administration clinical trials on robotic heart surgery more than 10 years ago. Now he says snake robots have become a commonly used tool that gives surgeons a whole new perspective.

"It's like the ability to have little hands inside the patients, as if the surgeon had been shrunken, and was working on the heart valve," he said.

But Argenziano and experts in robotics say the new creations work best when they're designed for very specific tasks. "The robot is a tool. It is no different in that sense than a scalpel. It's really a master-slave device," he said.

Howie Choset has been researching and building robots, particularly snake robots, at Pittsburgh's Carnegie Mellon University for years.

Choset believes that his snake robot and others like it help reduce medical costs by making complex surgeries faster and easier. Choset says his new design is smaller and more flexible than earlier models: The diameter of the head is less than the size of a dime.

The size of surgical robots allows surgeons to operate with far less damage to the body, helping the patient heal faster. For example, instead of opening the entire chest up during heart surgery, a small incision is made, and the robot crawls inside to the proper spot.

Dr. Ashutosh Tewari of Cornell University Medical Center has used robotic tools to perform thousands of prostate operations. He said the precision of the tiny robotic tool is vital not just to cutting out cancerous tumors, but to seeing exactly what nerves to leave intact.

Tewari said he's most excited about the potential for surgical robots to do things humans can't do. He said the variety of sensors available for surgical robots keeps expanding, even as they get smaller. He said they may one day be able to test chemicals or blood in the body, or even the electrical connections in nerves.

Choset has also built larger snake robots designed for search and rescue, or just exploration. They can climb poles or trees and then look around through a camera in the head, and slither through places humans can't reach.

"We sent our snake robots into these caves off the coast of the Red Sea to look for evidence of ancient Egyptian ships," he said. "To me archaeology is like search and rescue, but everyone's been dead for 5,000 years," reducing the pressure.

Another expert at Carnegie Mellon stresses that there's still an enormous gap between humans and even the most high-tech robots. Manuela Velosa noted that robots have been built that excel at one or two tasks ? but not at the variety of tasks humans perform without even thinking.

Velosa has been building robots that ask humans for help when they don't know what to do, as well as teams of robots that play soccer against each other. Sometimes, the robots surprise her.

During one soccer game against robots from another university, the Carnegie Mellon team scored on a particular play. That sent a positive signal to the robot's computers, which are designed to reward success and discourage failures in the game.

Her robots then tried the play again ? and scored again. It turned out they had discovered a programing flaw in the other team of robots, just like some sports teams find a flaw in their opponents.

In the second half Velosa's robot's kept using the same play, scoring every time, and thus reinforcing the tendency to try the play over and over. The robots crushed the other team.

"It was programmed by me, but it looked to me as if they learned," she said. "I believe we are much closer to having robots be able to coexist with humans. The beautiful thing is you see the robots learning."

All US military are trained to refuse unlawful orders, with officers authorized to arrest those who issue unlawful orders. The problem is that the 1% who want these wars educate our military on lawful orders once war has begun, but never on the law when war itself is lawful or not. The 1% who own the 6 corporations that dominate US media will also never communicate war law.

Therefore, the US military have the power to end the 1%?s mockery of their service, their families, and trillions of the 99%?s tax dollars whenever individuals or groups so choose.

How much longer will US military and law enforcement tolerate 1% policies of war that kill millions, harm billions, and loot trillions?

Importantly, the 99% of the American public also dishonor our military with any thoughts, words, or deeds under illegal US Wars of Aggression other than to demand arrests of obvious US War Criminals, and immediate end of the criminal wars.

7. The Vietnam War occurred after the US allowed the cancellation of an election to unify the country, as escalated with the Gulf of Tonkin incident: false intelligence at best, but then manipulated into a false-flag event for a ?defensive? war.

DALLAS --?Police were in a standoff Monday with?a robbery suspect who climbed up a construction crane?about 150?feet above Southern Methodist University?s campus and threatened to shoot officers trying to talk him down.

Officials with the Dallas Police Department said they received a call from Southern Methodist University about a man on a crane who said he?had a?gun.

Police SWAT units were called in to establish communication with the man. Police have not confirmed whether the man was armed.

Witnesses told NBCDFW.com?they saw a man wearing a red shirt perched?inside the control box of the crane, located on the south side of the campus.

The man has not moved the crane, which is powerless. The machinery?was being used to build student housing.

Dallas Police Department spokesperson Melinda Gutierrez said since the crane doesn?t have any power, it means the cab doesn?t have air conditioning. ?That would help in our favor,? Gutierrez told the Dallas Morning News.

Witnesses said they were evacuated from campus buildings on the SMU campus. A nearby gym was also evacuated.

University officials?told NBC News classes were not in session on Monday because of the federal holiday. School is also between its May and June sessions.?

Streets from U.S. 75 toward the SMU campus on Mockingbird Lane were shut down.

Police said the?man was a suspect in an?overnight aggravated robbery of a vehicle in the area just before 2:30 a.m. Monday.

ARVIN ?Recently, conservative republicans opposed Violence Against Women Act because the act would extend its protection to same sex couples and undocumented residents.

The fight isn?t over for those, who protect victims of domestic violence. This past fall, Greater Bakersfield Legal Assistance Paralegal Carmen Burgos did a domestic violence presentation for the Building Healthy Communities South Kern Youth Group. Although the presentation was for the BHC South Kern Youth, the information is important to everyone.

Burgos, who has been a paralegal for 12 years, has seen her share of domestic violence cases.

?Unfortunately women are the victims of domestic violence. Research has shown that there are many reasons why a person stays in an abusive relationship and how many people are in one,? she said. ?There are a lot of reasons why a person stays in an abusive relationship, two out of three people are in abusive relationships.?

Burgos said most often victims of domestic violence confuse actions by their abusers. They see it as love instead of control.

?What most women mistake with ?caring about me? or ?he must really love me? is actually abusive behavior. The husband having to know where you are, who are you around, how much time it takes to get from one place to another, restricting use of clothing -where husband picks out outfit or does not allow you to wear a certain shirt,? she explained. ?It can be easily confused with ?oh he really loves me instead of thinking of it as abusive behavior.? The abuser wants to be in control, it is not because they love you.?

Burgos pointed out the common misconception with domestic violence that it has to be physical. Although research still shows women as the victims, a growing number of men are victims of domestic violence.

?Domestic violence is not only physical, but it is also psychological and emotional. Emotional abuse hurts the most. Culture plays a very big role in why the person is abusive. The myth though is that for it to be abuse, it must be physical abuse which is not true,? said Burgos. ?Men were not born abusers. They saw it as a child and learned the behavior. Hispanic women do not want to be ?embarrassed,? therefore they never speak about their relationship problems. It stays within the household only.?

Carmen explained how clients sometimes come to her office to speak to her. They?re often broken spiritually and emotionally. Helplessly, women have thought of many ways to stop the abuse during their relationship.

?If it happened once, it will most likely happen again. Girls think that abuse will stop if ?I get pregnant? it will stop,? she said. ?But this in turn gives there more reason to stay within the relationship. Because, now there is more responsibility for the woman like who is going to support and take care of the child and me? Living that kind of relationship is hard.?

Statistics have shown it takes up to nine tries before leaving the relationship. When the victim decides to leave it is when the physical abuse is at its peak.

However, there are several things a victim can do to protect themselves. If there domestic violence occurs, you must immediately call 911. The victim can request an Emergency Protection Order, which is a restraining order. This is where the abuser has to leave the house for five days until things either cool down or they met in court after its effect. Even the undocumented residents can apply for this order. When the couple meets in court, a Civil Restraining Order can be requested by the victim and granted.

?If you want to help victims just to listen to them and giving them emotional support,? she said. ?Make sure that victim must acknowledge the abuse and must not minimize it, victims must be share and tell.?

Burgos said there?s help for women, who aren?t U.S. citizens and feel they must remained with their abusive spouses to gain their citizenship.

?The Violence Against Women Act was passed in 1994, it is only for married couples, when the spouse uses immigration status against the women or to keep them trapped, it allows for women to file a petition to become a citizen without the knowledge or consent of the spouse, but they have to prove that the marriage was based on love and was legitimate,? she said. ?As of 2002 a U-Visa is given as well but the victim must testify and cops need to accord with found evidence and must also approve as well that it was abuse. These protections are not only for abuse victims but also victims of any crime.?
